Mayor for a day! 17-year-old gets a shot at Rangpur City Corporation’s helm

A rural girl from Nilphamari's Jaldhaka upazila had a full day today. In the end, she was selected to be the symbol of the mayor of the Rangpur City Corporation (RCC).

The project formed part of Plan International's "Girls' Take Over" campaign, which is a global initiative designed to empower girls and overcoming the stereotypes which hinder girls from taking leading positions.

SSC candidates Boishakhy Jha (17), the mayor of the day and an active member of the organization's Youth Advisory Panel (YAP). She was already well-known in certain parts of her upazila for being an activist against child marriage.

The day began around 10:30 am on the Rangpur City Corporation Complex in the city. The the incumbent Mayor Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa welcoming her to the office.

Then, he symbolically handed the charge to Boishakhy. He was then able to introduce her to councillors elect officials, councillors, and other employees in the corporation.

The mayor then spoke to Boishakhy on his work as mayor.

The Mayor Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa demonstrated to her how the role of the mayor functions and what it requires and showed her a variety of subtleties that are difficult to comprehend from afar. The mayor made Boishakhy be seated next to him in his office.

In a press conference as the mayor's symbolic representative, Boishakhy stated, "This is a completely new experience for me. If I had not sat on this chair [of the mayor], I wouldn't have known about all the intricacies of the job."

Panel Mayor Md Mahmudur Rahman T. Titu Dr. Hrishikesh Sarker the interim divisional manager of Plan International Bangladesh; and Mobarok Hossain, town manager of UNDP were also in attendance at the time.
